Botevgrad is a city in Western Bulgaria in Sofia region. It is the second largest in the district after Samokov and is the administrative center of Botevgrad municipality. It is surrounded by the Balkan Mountains. It is located in Sofia region, about 60 km from Sofia.
The most ancient predecessor of Botevgrad is a Thracian settlement from the fifth century BC, which is located in the area of today's hop constructions in the Monastirishte locality, west of the town. From there in the Botevgrad Museum are collected a variety of household and construction ceramics, tools of work, marble vault with the image of the Thracian horseman. Fragments of a Roman road column bearing the emperors Valentinian, Valentine and Grazian were also found near the city.
The proximity of the settlement to the Roman road causes its inhabitants to abandon it and settle 3 km south of it in the forest-shelter where a new village called Zelin grows. When the Slavs settled in our lands, the settlement acquired a purely Slavic appearance. Throughout the Second Bulgarian State, the village of Zelin falls within the confines of a feudal estate whose ruler Sevast Ognyan, a prominent boyar under Tsar Ivan Shishman, with the seat of Bozhenishki Urvich, gave last resistance to the Ottoman captives in defense of the Bulgarian state.
The clock tower in Botevgrad is located in the city center, on Osvobojdenie Square. It was built in 1866 by the local master builder Vuno Markov. It is the highest Renaissance clock tower in Bulgaria and is a symbol of the city. Its height is 30m.
Botevgrad Museum of History - the museum exhibition consists of original documents, photographs and belongings exceeds 15,000 units.
The central square is also home to one of the most beautiful churches in Bulgaria, the Church of the Assumption, or better known as the White Church.
The Church of the Holy Ascension was built from 1860 to 1864. Today it is one of the oldest buildings in Botevgrad. In 1970 it was declared a church of historic value of local importance.
Bebresh Dam is located 10km from the town of Botevgrad. The reservoir is rich in various species of fish such as perch, brook, maple and carp.
